CONCEPT
Not as sexy as the shape of water led you to believe!POWERS
mermaid physiology"Mermaid physiology" is Raine's secret code for "I am afraid I'm turning into a fish"; much to his consternation, this seems to be a progressive condition. When his liminality first manifested, he thought this was just water-breathing. Now he has gills, some patches of scaly skin, and webbed fingers and toes. His fingers and toes are also becoming ever-so-slightly elongated at a rate of about half a centimeter a year. Recently, he has begun to grow a dorsal fin. He also gets crusty if he doesn't spend enough time submerged in water.
regenerative blood
His blood promotes slightly accelerated healing. Minor cuts and wounds stitch up faster, broken bones heal faster, etc. Any wound that would usually be fatal would still be fatal to him. He mostly uses this ability to cut away his scaly skin and webbing, which do eventually grow back. Using his blood for transfusion passes on some of this effect to the recipient, but it is diminished.
omnilingualism
He can understand and read any language, even animal communication. He cannot, however, speak them innately. He still has to learn, although it's easier for him than the average person. He cannot talk back to animals (although he can sometimes accomplish rudimentary yes/no communication with particularly intelligent animals like dogs via force of will).

APPEARANCE
5'10", lanky, mostly elbows, green eyes, dark brown hair oftentimes bleached and dyed various colors.HISTORY
Raine was raised by a single father. He doesn't know what happened to his mother; he never asked. His father did try his best to take care of Raine, but was a perpetual ne'er-do-well. Life was chaotic; they were moving around a lot, Raine had very little stability, and he was oftentimes left alone or with only his father's large and ever-rotating cast of friends for caretakers. When Raine was about ten, his father was caught participating in a home robbery, and Raine was sent into the foster care system.
This was ultimately a good change, and the foster home he was put into was loving and stable, and he's still in touch with his foster parents to this day. Foster brother Willy was placed with the family shortly after Raine was. Even though he was a troubled pre-teen, often testing his limits and getting in trouble, he eventually settled down in high school and began to really apply himself, showing an interest and aptitude for chemistry.
His plans for the future were temporarily disrupted when he manifested liminal powers about three months before the end of high school; he was transferred to a liminal school despite his protests. Ultimately he got back on track and attended UCSD, studying to be a pharmacist.
During his college years, he noticed that his liminal powers were progressively getting, in his opinion, "worse". This spurred his decision to apply to Enodia station straight out of school, where he's been for four years. He works as a pharmacist and studies drug efficacy in liminals, although he's also hoping to find some sort of way to stop his fish-transformation from progressing any further.

WRITING: I prefer writing in 3rd person present tense, but I can switch if you'd prefer to write in past tense. I tend to forget that GDocs exist so I always appreciate an email along with a tag to keep my to-do list visible in my inbox.
BACKTAGGING: Feel free to backtag me whenever/wherever! I am very forgetful and I sometimes tag old stuff after dropping it for awhile but no obligation to tag back.
THREADHOPPING: Go for it.
PRIVATE FILTERS: If they're filtered away from my characters on my posts and they continue more than ~48 hours after the initial post goes up, I'd appreciate it if you moved it elsewhere.
SENSITIVE TOPICS: Mostly I'm good at moderating my own content intake, but always appreciate a heads up if a scene is heading towards a heavy topic. Raine's backstory deals with elements of: childhood neglect, depression, body horror and minor self-harm in the context of his liminal mutations.
SMUT: I am a PG 13 girly and writing sexually explicit content is not my preference. Fade to black on logs/scenes. Fine with light innuendo/explicit content in passing.
CONFLICT: He sits at a weird intersection of non-confrontational and pathologically honest, which can create some interesting scenarios. In general he's not usually looking to stir shit up, but also if he's thinking something he'll generally just say it, so if he has a problem with someone he'll tell them to their face. He's got a bit of an abrasive personality, so I'm good with him clashing with other characters, but if anything is ever not fun for you OOCly just let me know and I will back right off.
VIOLENCE: Raine is not a fighter and his instinct in any dangerous situation is just to run or hide. He's never punched anyone or been punched in his life and he'd love to keep that streak going. He's not going to start any fights. OOCly, if you really want your character to get into a physical altercation with him, you can message me about it, but he's probably not going to fight back whatsoever.
BADMOUTHING: Any time, go nuts, have a blast. Make fun of his bad hair. He won't generally hold this against anybody.
SHIPPING & CRUSHES: Raine is not currently very romance-minded due to a handful of factors (depressed, trying not to think about his weird physical mutations, still getting over his last relationship) and not interested in casual relationships.

Voice: Standard American accent with occasional SoCal inflections.
Style: Raine's wardrobe is a psy op specifically designed to get as many people as possible to ask him if he's alright. He's a cheap bastard who doesn't like to buy things new, so his wardrobe is thrifted and eclectic. It's also very small given how insane every piece of clothing he owns is. Friends and coworkers will become familiar with the staple pieces. It's a lot of bright colors, clashing textures, vaguely 90's inspired cuts. Pinterest link.
Hygiene: Even though he has a tendency to look a little crusty he is actually quite meticulous about keeping himself and his space clean.
Idiosyncrasies: Has absolutely terrible posture. Always slouching. Sits like a gremlin.

Decorations: Raine doesn't like "owning things" and this is reflected in his sense of interior design. Most of the furniture is station standard. He has no personal effects in the living room. He does have a nice, large, nonstandard bathtub in the master bath.
